The Four Seconds Open Call is a celebration of spontaneous beauty captured through the camera. The Mobile Photography Awards (MPAs) in partnership with Obscura Gallery (Melbourne, Australia) are pleased to announce an open call for entries for artists worldwide to submit photographs and images created on mobile devices (phone and tablet) for the Four Seconds Exhibition – a fine art showcase for Mobile Photography and Art. The exhibit will feature 25 images, as chosen by our jury.

Since its inception in July 2007, Melbourne, Australia’s Obscura Gallery has propelled the photographic medium, together with a dedicated team of gallery staff and passionate fine art and documentary photographers. The gallery incorporates a variety of media into its exhibition program, including photography, collage, painting, new media and installation. Obscura Gallery displays a wide cross section of contemporary art forms and collaborates with artists working at the forefront of their practice, as well as artists in the earlier stages of their development.

The three prime movers at Obscura Gallery are founder Nadav Baker, Curator/Photographer Emmanuel Santos and Gallery Director Gil Baker. Nadav Baker founded Obscura Gallery in July 2007. On a photo shoot with photographer Emmanuel Santos, the two decided on the need for a space in Melbourne dedicated to photography. Following several years as an educator, Nadav established Obscura Gallery. He has since become a prominent figure in the industry, guiding photographers along their career and founding the Obscura Gallery Education Program.

Emmanuel Santos began his photographic career working for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees as a photo essayist. In 1982 he migrated to Melbourne and is now a renowned photographic figure. Santos has widely exhibited his work, including Monash Gallery of Art, Alliance Francaise, Obscura Gallery, Span Galleries, Jewish Museum, Ukraine, Brazil, Israel, France, Philippines, China, Switzerland, Italy and the Czech Republic. His work is held in such permanent collections as Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Jewish Museum of Australia, State Library of Victoria, National Gallery of Victoria, Victorian Arts Centre, Immigration Museum, The Holocaust Centre, National Library of Australia & the Parliament House permanent Art Collection.

Gallery Director Gilad Baker completed his Bachelor of Law/Arts at the University of Monash with a major in Art History. He has been an active member of the Obscura team since its inauguration in 2007. In 2012 Gil travelled for a year to research and experience the vibrant and contrasting art scenes of Eastern Europe and Central America. Upon his return, Gil began working as Gallery Manager at Obscura.
